Getting Around Atlanta

The best way to get around Atlanta is by car, as many attractions are spread out across the city, making them difficult or inconvenient to access by public transportation. If you don't have your own car, all of the major rental car companies, such as Enterprise, Budget, Avis, and Hertz, have locations in Atlanta. You can rent a car at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and drive it to your destination in Atlanta, then return it at the airport when you leave.

If you're planning on staying in downtown Atlanta, you can get around quite easily by MARTA. MARTA runs a rail system that has four lines. It has excellent coverage within the downtown core of Atlanta, in addition to the Red and Gold lines providing rail access to the inner suburbs to the north. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is located south of the city, and can be reached with MARTA rail on the Red and Gold lines. You can purchase a reusable Breeze Card to pay your fare. The Breeze Card can be reloaded with money anytime. If you don't want to purchase a Breeze Card, you can also buy unlimited passes that are good for 24 hours, seven days, or 30 days.

The backbone of MARTA is its bus network. Buses in Atlanta have coverage most everywhere that the rail network does not. There are over 91 different routes connecting various parts of the city with each other, as well as downtown with the rest of Atlanta. Bus fares are paid in exactly the same way as MARTA rail fares, with your choice of Breeze Card or unlimited passes.

Taxis are a great way to get around central Atlanta and to and from the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. If you're going to be spending the majority of your time in downtown Atlanta, or are just using a taxi to get back and forth from the airport, you should have no problems with using a taxi to get around the city. Taxis can be hailed from the street or outside arrivals at the airport. You can also call for a taxi to pick you up ahead of time.

If you're going to be staying in the downtown area of Atlanta, you can also walk to get to most places you want to go. Walking is free and can often be faster than dealing with traffic, parking, or public transit.
